Quake Remix Jam – Facility Qataclism

The Remix Jam was organized by Fairweather, a prominent member of the Quake and Team Fortress 2 communities. The objective of this jam was to translate/adapt a multiplayer level from other game into a Quake singleplayer level.

We used the new Copper version 1.3 by Lunaran and we had no texture limitation so I used Makkon textures. Also the level features a custom track from the Goldeneye 64 Remake Album by Brandon Wiebe.

I chose Facility Multiplayer from Goldeneye 64 because:

  • It’s a certified classic
  • I had 90% of the geometry of the level laying around in my hard drive since 2022 (this is the most important reason, and since this was remake of the multiplayer version I cut it down in half, just like the original level)

However, it was not an easy task.

Simply recreating the level geometry into Quake wasn’t enough and I had to fix all my old geometry.

Furthermore these games take a very different approach to the FPS genre: Quake benefits from elevated positions, constrast lights and very looped and telegraphed gameplay. Facility did not have any of these sensibilities in mind when designed plus is full of dead end rooms that break the flow of the level, so my main task was to fit some elevated positions into the level, block the visibility of some hallways and add a couple of rotation points/shortcuts to improve navigation a little bit.
